What you can expect

On this day trip from Hilo, see the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Akaka Falls, Downtown Hilo and Liliuokalani Garden, as well as a black-sand beach and a macadamia nut farm. With a group limited to 25 people, listen to commentary from your knowledgeable and attentive guides.

Visit a black-sand beach formed by lava entering the ocean and frequented by green sea turtles. Then, see the Japanese-style Liliuokalani Garden, situated next to the Banyan Drive hotels on the coast and named after the last monarch of Hawaii.

Next, admire the rainforests of the Hamakua Coast as you drive to the must-see Akaka Falls, where water tumbles 420 feet (128 m) into a gorge. A moderately challenging half-mile loop takes you through a rainforest of philodendron vines, orchids, bamboo groves and heliconia. First, spot the 100-foot (30 m) Kahuna Falls, then see Akaka Falls, laden with ferns.

At the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Farm, home to 250,000 trees and a factory, try chocolate macadamia ice cream and visit the gift shop, offering assorted nuts and biscuits. Then head to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – covering 200,000 acres (80,937 ha), this is a site unlike anywhere else in the world.

As you explore the park, admire Kilauea, visit the Thomas A. Jaggar Museum and Halemaumau Crater – home of Pele, the fire-goddess – and see the July 1974 lava flow. At the Thurston Lava Tube, stroll through a rainforest and a Hawaiian cave. Finish your trip around “the Orchid Isle” at the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens, offering many varieties of vibrant orchids, including some unique to Hawaii.
