In the heart of Shunde’s neighbouring district of Panyu, hidden among banana groves and fish ponds, lies one of Guangdong’s most exquisite cultural treasures. Baomo Garden is not merely a garden — it is a poem written in stone, a history carved in brick, and a philosophy flowing through water.

The garden’s origins trace back to the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty (early 19th century), when local villagers built a temple honouring the legendary upright official Bao Zheng — better known as Lord Bao — the “Blue Sky of Day and Night” who fearlessly fought corruption . The original garden was destroyed in the 1950s, but in 1995, a remarkable community-led reconstruction began, led by a retired local party secretary who raised funds from overseas Chinese and invested 150 million yuan over six years to bring Baomo back to life .

Today, Baomo Garden spans 2,000 square metres and holds National AAAA status . But its soul lies in the seamless fusion of three distinct identities: a Qing official culture memorial, a Lingnan classical garden, and a Pearl River Delta water town .

The garden’s architecture speaks in the dialect of late Qing Lingnan style — black brick walls, “smoked roller” tile roofs, stucco brackets,满洲窗 (Manchurian windows), and corridors that wrap around every courtyard, ensuring that rain never interrupts a stroll . Over 30 stone bridges arch across interconnected lakes, and the entire garden is threaded with water like jade ribbons through a scholar’s robe .

At the heart of this aquatic labyrinth lies the garden’s most extraordinary treasure: a 62-meter-long porcelain relief mural of Zhang Zeduan’s Along the River During the Qingming Festival, recognised by the Guinness World Records as the largest of its kind . Across from it stands the equally breathtaking Blooming and Harmonious Chirping Wall — a 260-square-meter brick carving featuring over 600 birds in exquisite relief, executed in the “hanging-thread” style unique to Guangdong .
