What you can expect

  • Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of the Funasaki area, surrounded by the peaceful seas and lush nature of the Goto Islands. Known as a land of history and faith, this is where envoys to Tang China once stopped by, and where the revered Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi Kukai is said to have offered prayers.

Experience the tradition of Goto Udon, which has been handed down for over 1,200 years. Goto Udon is known for its thin, firm noodles with a smooth texture achieved by using camellia oil. It is recognised as one of Japan’s three great udon varieties, alongside Sanuki and Inaniwa udon, and continues to be made using the traditional hand-stretching method.

While enjoying the historic scenery of Funasaki, knead and stretch the dough under the guidance of skilled artisans, experiencing the traditional hand-stretching technique first-hand. The experience is designed so that even beginners can enjoy it safely, engaging all five senses to fully appreciate Goto’s food culture.

At the end of the experience, receive a “Certificate of Completion: Traditional Goto Udon Making Experience” in recognition of your effort. The udon you make will then be carefully finished and delivered to your accommodation or home (only in Japan). Relive your journey’s memories at your dining table while continuing to feel the charm of Goto.
