The island is most famous for the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves), a historic building preserved as a museum and poignant memorial to the Atlantic slave trade. Visitors can walk through the cramped cells where men, women, and children were held before their forced journey across the ocean. The most haunting feature is the “Door of No Return”—a narrow stone portal opening directly onto the Atlantic, symbolising the final glimpse millions of Africans had of their homeland before being transported into a life of servitude.
