What you can expect

  • Day 1: Gondar City Tour

Begin your adventure with a pickup from the airport. After settling into your hotel, explore the sites of Gondar. Visit the Royal Enclosure, home to six castles and several other buildings. See Fasilidas’s Pool, still used for Timket celebrations today, and the Debre Birhan Selassie church, with the most famous ceiling in Ethiopia.

    Day 2: Lalibela

Tour the magnificent rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This group of eleven monolithic and semi-monolithic structures were carved directly into the stone of the mountainside at least 800 years ago. This complex boasts the largest monolithic church in the world, a maze of passageways and tunnels, intricately carved reliefs, and fabulous examples of icon painting.

    Day 3: Ashoton Monastery

Visit the Ashoton Monastery, another special rock church. This active mountain monastery features a cave church. Choose to walk for 3 hours or opt for a part drive/part walking experience.

    Day 4: Semera

Depart to Semera via Addis Ababa and spend the night in Semera.

    Day 5: Danakil Depression Tour

Embark on a tour of the Danakil Depression. Spend 2 nights on this tour. See Afdera Salt Lake and Erta Ale, a volcano with a 3-hour walk to the top of the caldera and up to 70 minutes walk to the rim.

    Day 6: Hamedela and Dallol

Drive 80 km to Hamedela and visit the big salt lake Assale. Witness salt mining and explore Dallol, the wonderful sulphur moon landscape with amazing colours and formations. This part of the itinerary involves outdoor camping. Bring swimming clothes for a chance to swim in the salt lake.

Day 7: Return to Addis Ababa

Drive back to Semera airport and fly back to Addis Ababa
