What you can expect
Begin your adventure by meeting your local captain and crew at the bustling public boat ticket office on Gili Trawangan. Grab your fitted fins, snorkel, and mask, and board the spacious wooden boat alongside a diverse group of fellow travellers from all over the globe.
As the boat engines roar to life and you glide away from the shoreline, the magic of the glass-bottom boat becomes instantly clear. Embedded in the centre of the boat’s deck are thick, clear glass panels. Looking down, the deep blue water quickly transforms into a crystal-clear window to the seabed. Even before putting your face in the water, you can watch patches of seagrass, darting reef fish, and intricate coral formations pass beneath your feet.
Cruise east towards Gili Meno, the quietest and most romantic of the three islands. Your first official snorkelling stop is just off Meno’s coastline: the world-famous “Nest” statues created by sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor.
When the captain shouts, “Snorkel time!” slide into the warm, refreshing ocean. Peering through your mask, the sight below is spellbinding. Life-sized stone figures of 48 people stand in a circle, embracing one another. Over time, nature has claimed the artwork; the statues are now beautifully encrusted with soft corals and sponges, attracting schools of damselfish and sergeant majors.
Next, take a short boat ride further along Gili Meno to Turtle Point. The Gili Islands are world-renowned as a sea turtle sanctuary, and this spot rarely disappoints. As you swim gently over the sloping coral drop-offs, you will likely spot majestic Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles. Some rest peacefully on the ocean floor, while others gracefully glide to the surface to catch a breath of air.
Continue to Gili Air, an island that perfectly blends the social vibe of Trawangan with the tranquility of Meno. The snorkelling spot here features vast, shallow Coral Gardens. The underwater visibility here is spectacular, often exceeding 20 metres. You will find yourself surrounded by a kaleidoscope of neon-colored fish—clownfish nesting in sea anemones, parrotfish crunching on coral, and schools of electric blue fusiliers darting past.
After hours of swimming, the boat docks directly on the shores of Gili Air for a mid-day lunch break. You have about an hour and a half to explore the island's sandy lanes, sit at a beachfront warung (local café), and enjoy a plate of traditional Nasi Goreng (fried rice) or fresh grilled seafood with your feet buried in the sand.
By mid-afternoon, the captain calls everyone back to the boat. The ride back to Gili Trawangan is a relaxed, sun-drenched affair. With reggae music playing softly from the boat's speakers, you can look down through the glass bottom one last time as the afternoon sun casts golden ripples across the ocean floor.
