What you can expect

Begin your journey at Gаrni Temple, a masterpiece of Hellenistic architecture overlooking the Azat River gorge. See the colonnaded pagan temple dedicated to the sun god, remains of Roman-style baths with mosaic floors, and panoramic views of the canyon.

Learn how animals, especially lions and other big cats, symbolised power, protection, and cosmic order in the ancient world, and how this symbolic language later influenced Christian art and heraldry.

Next, descend into the Garni Gorge, home to the famous Symphony of Stones, towering hexagonal basalt columns resembling a giant stone organ. Discover why ancient people considered such places sacred, how nature itself became a “temple” long before organised religion, and the continuity between pagan beliefs and Christian sacred landscapes.

The highlight of the tour is Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO-listed complex partly carved directly into the rock. Explore rock-cut churches with incredible acoustics, medieval carvings, khachkars, and noble coats of arms, and places connected with the legendary Spear of Destiny, once kept here.

Learn about animal symbolism, including lions and other feline figures carved into stone as eternal guardians. Then, meet the famous cats of Geghard Monastery, feed them (food is provided), observe their peaceful life among ancient walls, and take unforgettable photos.
