The Salar de Aguas Calientes Sur is located 60 kilometres southeast of the town of Socaire, and 154 kilometres from the town of San Pedro de Atacama in the direction of Paso Sico (border crossing with Argentina). This salt flat is also known as Piedras Rojas.

Miscanti and Miñiques Lagoons The Miscanti and Miñiques Lagoons are sister lagoons and known as “Altiplanic Lagoons”, formed by groundwater from melting snow from the Miscanti hill and the Miñiques volcano. In this natural setting it is very common to find diverse fauna such as foxes, flamingos and vicuñas.

Socaire is a Lickanantay indigenous community, whose territory articulates different ecological levels. That is why the subsistence of our people complements livestock, traditional agriculture and its secondary products. Socaire Church The church of San Bartolomé is part of the historical heritage of Socaire. San Bartolomé is the patron saint of shepherds and also of those who work the skins, manufacture or use leather, gloves, coats, belts and boots, his festival is celebrated every August 24. The church is characterised by Andean colonial architecture characterised by a main nave with side chapels, whose construction system is similar to that of traditional houses, forming part of a long tradition of volcanic stone quarries and edgers.

In the town of Toconao, belonging to the commune of San Pedro de Atacama, Antofagasta region, is the Chaxa lagoon, the central point of the Salar de Atacama. This sector is located within the Los Flamencos National Reserve. The reserve stands out for the protection of species such as the tuco tuco of the puna, culpeo fox, puma, large parina, Chilean flamingo, small parina, vicuña and guanaco. It also serves as a conservation area for vulnerable flora, highlighting the presence of tamarugos and carob trees.
