Head out of Paris for a day to see the beaches of World War II. Spend a sombre moment of remembrance at the Mémorial de Caen, stand on the windswept shoreline where allied forces landed on D-Day, and absorb the sobering serenity of the American Cemetery before returning to Paris by train.

Make your way to Saint-Lazare in the early morning and settle into a seat on the train, taking in the view as you roll through the quiet countryside during the 2-hour trip to Caen, on the Atlantic coast. Hop off the train and meet your guide at the station in Caen for the short ride to the Mémorial de Caen. Follow your guide inside to study displays that focus on the history of violence, major conflicts of the 20th century, and the impact of World War II.

Spend some time in the calm memorial gardens before a 2-course lunch at the memorial's restaurant, La Terrasse, which serves up classic bistro fare like duck confit, steak with fries, sole meunière, and fresh salads along with regional wines. After lunch, continue your exploration with a 5-hour driving tour that takes you to some of the historically significant sites and monuments around the area.

Stand atop the towering cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, which were scaled by members of the US Army Ranger Assault Group on D-Day, and watch the waves crash at Omaha Beach, where thousands of allied troops lost their lives. Pay your respects before the waving flag and neat rows of white crosses at the Normandy American Cemetery, get up close to machine gun emplacements and concrete fortifications used by the Germans at Longues-sur-Mer, and see where the artificial Mulberry harbour was installed at Arromanches. In the evening, your guide drops you back at the station in Caen to catch your train back to Paris.
