What you can expect

Step off the train at Seibu Hon-Kawagoe Station — 30 minutes from Shinjuku, 300 years from modern Tokyo. Kawagoe, in Saitama Prefecture, is the merchant city whose black-walled Edo-era storehouses, centuries-old bell tower, and Meiji-era sweets alley have survived almost entirely unchanged. Most visitors rush through in 90 minutes. This 3-hour walking tour is built to show you why it deserves more.

On this intimate tour (maximum 6 guests), you experience five things that define Kawagoe — not from a bus window, but on foot, with a guide who knows the shop owners and families by name.

WHAT WE EXPERIENCE

Stop 1 — Kurazukuri District (Chiyoda-cho, Kawagoe): Walk the stone-paved streets of Kawagoe's historic merchant quarter, where black clay storehouses line the road exactly as they did 300 years ago. Your guide explains why this Edo-era architectural style was chosen — and what it meant to be a merchant in feudal Japan.

Stop 2 — Toki no Kane Bell Tower: Stand beneath the 1624 bell tower that has rung every hour for over 400 years, surviving the fires that destroyed much of Kawagoe. Your guide shares the storey of why this tower became the city's enduring symbol.

Stop 3 — Koedo Kurary (小江戸蔵里): Step inside this converted Edo-era sake brewery and try Kawagoe's locally brewed sake straight from a vending machine — one of the most photographed and unexpected experiences in Little Edo. Your guide explains the brewery's history and helps you choose your pour.

Stop 4 — Nagamine-en Tea House at Satsu-no-tsuji Crossroads: Sit inside one of Kawagoe's oldest tea houses at the beating heart of Kurazukuri District. Whisk your own matcha the traditional way, guided step by step. A rare chance to slow down in the middle of a walking tour.

Stop 5 — Kashiya Yokocho (Sweets Alley): Taste three iconic Kawagoe street foods — a grilled eel skewer, sweet potato soft cream topped with a signature heart, and freshly made dango — at the legendary sweets alley delighting visitors since the Meiji era.

YOUR TOUR

3 hours | Maximum 6 guests | Starts and ends at Starbucks Coffee, Seibu Hon-Kawagoe Station (Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture — 30 min from Shinjuku on the Seibu Shinjuku Line)

FOR SOLO TRAVELERS, COUPLES, AND SMALL GROUPS

This tour is built for anyone who wants to understand Kawagoe, not just photograph it. Whether you are travelling solo, as a couple, or with friends, the maximum 6-guest limit means you will have a guide almost entirely to yourself. No commentary to a crowd. No rushing to fit 20 strangers' schedules.

Not sure what to expect? Your guide handles everything from the first stop. Just arrive at the meeting point and follow along — all 5 tastings are included, no extra payments required on the day.

Kawagoe is what Tokyo used to look like — and what Kyoto still looks like today. This tour is built to show you why it deserves three hours, not two.

Want more time? Our 5-hour extended tour also visits Kita-in Temple and Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine.
