What you can expect

Embark on a day trip from Tallinn to the Estonian Mining Museum and the charming coastal town of Sillamäe. Explore the museum's underground tunnels and learn about the town's history. Enjoy a guided bus tour with a local guide.

Start your day with a bus ride from Tallinn to the Estonian Mining Museum. Descend 8 metres below ground to explore a network of mining tunnels. Equipped with a helmet, coat, and lamp, experience the working conditions of miners, see original equipment, and even ride an underground train used by miners.

Above ground, the Enrichment Factory showcases the process of oil shale energy production and offers insights into the future of energy. The museum features interactive displays and educational programmes that delve into the history and technology of mining, making it suitable for visitors of all ages.

Next, take a short stop in the charming coastal town of Sillamäe. Stroll through the town and learn about the uniqueness of the Ida-Viru region. In the 19th century, Sillamäe was a popular resort town, attracting notable figures like composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and physiologist Ivan Pavlov.

However, during the Soviet era, it became a secret city, not appearing on maps, due to its uranium enrichment plant that contributed to the Soviet nuclear programme. The town was built in the Stalinist neoclassical style, giving it a distinctive architectural character.

One of Sillamäe's main attractions is the Mere puiestee (Sea Boulevard) and its promenade. A grand staircase leads from the town square down to the boulevard, which is lined with historical buildings and culminates at a gazebo by the sea. The promenade offers scenic views of the Gulf of Finland and features rest areas, children's playgrounds, and an outdoor gym.

After your walk, enjoy a lunch break at a local restaurant (meal at own expense). Then, return to Tallinn in the evening.
