In 986 AD, the Byzantine Emperor Basil II retreated through this narrow corridor after a failed siege of Sofia. Waiting for him was Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria, who used the terrain to launch a devastating ambush from the surrounding slopes. The result was a crushing Byzantine defeat—an event that shaped the balance of power in the Balkans. As you walk along the ancient walls, you’ll not only see history—you’ll feel the strategic importance of this natural passage. After a great day of relaxation and exploration, you will be back in Sofia in the late afternoon.
