What you can expect

  • A car takes you from your hotel in Pokhara to the airport, where you board the helicopter. The flight follows the Kali Gandaki valley north, with Dhaulagiri on one side and the Annapurna range on the other, into the dry, high landscape of Mustang district.

The helicopter lands near Ranipauwa, a short walk from Muktinath temple. Ponies can be hired locally for the walk up. You have 80 to 90 minutes on the ground to visit the temple, walk under the 108 water spouts, see the Jwala Mai shrine with its natural flame, and do puja if you wish. Muktinath is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.

Ground time is limited because winds rise in the late morning and because of the altitude: walk slowly, drink water and tell the crew if you feel unwell.

The return flight brings you back to Pokhara, and a car takes you to your hotel.
