What you can expect
Your journey begins early in the morning as you depart Marrakech and head south towards the High Atlas Mountains in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. As the city fades behind you, the landscape transforms into the dramatic scenery of the Atlas range. Travel along winding mountain roads towards the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass, reaching an elevation of 2,260 metres—one of the main historic crossings linking Marrakech to the pre-Saharan regions. Along the way, enjoy scenic stops to capture views of terraced valleys, rugged cliffs, and traditional Berber villages built into the mountainsides.
Descending from the High Atlas, you will arrive around midday at the UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou, a remarkable fortified ksar that once stood along an important trans-Saharan trade route connecting Marrakech to the Sahara. Dating back to at least the 11th century, this site is one of the finest examples of traditional earthen architecture in Morocco. Wander through its narrow alleys, cross the riverbed, and climb to the top for panoramic views over palm groves and desert landscapes. Famous for its appearances in films such as Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones, the village offers a unique blend of history and cinema. After exploring, enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the kasbah.
In the afternoon, continue towards Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa.” Historically, this region was a key stop for caravans travelling between the Sahara and northern Morocco, serving as a strategic crossroads for trade and culture. Just outside the city, stop at Atlas Film Studios, founded in 1983 and now one of the largest film studios in the world, which helped establish Ouarzazate as a global filming destination. Take time to view and photograph the impressive exterior sets before continuing into the city.
The final highlight of the day is Kasbah Taourirt, a historic fortified residence that played a central role in regional power and trade. Originally built in the 17th century and later expanded by the influential Glaoui family in the 19th century, the kasbah once controlled key caravan routes across southern Morocco. Explore its maze of rooms, decorated towers, and inner courtyards, and admire the craftsmanship of its carved cedar ceilings and traditional stucco work.
In the late afternoon, begin your return journey across the High Atlas Mountains, arriving back in Marrakech in the early evening, where you will be dropped off at your hotel or riad.
