What you can expect

Begin your adventure early in the morning with a stop in Skaleta for breakfast. Then, head to the Omalos Plateau, where your walk starts from Xiloskalo. Enter the vast canyon of 16 km and follow the path of the ancient river Taras.

On the way, see the caves that formed a natural shelter for the Cretans in war times and now are the natural habitat of the well-known wild goats or kri-kri. Halfway, come across the village of Santa Maria, which is currently abandoned.

Three kilometres before exiting the gorge, reach the Iron Gates (Sideroportes), the narrowest spot of the route, just a few metres wide but 300 metres high. A bit later, arrive in the small fishing village of Agia Roumeli, where you have quite a long time to lunch and to get a refreshing swim before boarding the ship that leads you back along the coast to Sfakia. There, your coaches wait to take you back to your hotel.
