Start your adventure on the calm and sheltered waters of the Arade River, a perfect area for beginners, families or anyone looking for a relaxed paddling experience.
From the river, enjoy beautiful views of Ferragudo’s picturesque waterfront village and paddle past the impressive São João do Arade Fort, one of the most iconic landmarks in the area.
Along the way, you can stop at Praia Grande, where there are several riverside cafés and beach bars for a drink or snack. If you prefer something quieter, bring your own picnic and take a break on one of the hidden river beaches, away from the crowds.
For those looking for a more adventurous route, continue from the river towards the ocean. Paddle past the beautiful Pintadinho Beach, follow the coastline around the Ponta do Altar Lighthouse and reach the highlight of the route: a secret sea cave with crystal-clear water and dramatic Algarve cliffs.
Your adventure starts at our shop in Ferragudo, just 100 metres from the river. Before you leave, our team will give you a full briefing with the recommended route, safety information and local tips. You will also receive a map, so you can explore independently and at your own pace.
This is a self-guided experience, so you can choose between a calm river adventure or a longer river-to-ocean route. The rental duration is 4 hours, giving you enough time to paddle, stop for photos, enjoy a swim, relax at a quiet beach or continue towards the ocean before returning the equipment.
Kayaks are suitable for 2 people and may also fit one small child if there is enough space and the total weight does not exceed 170 kg. Stand up paddle boards are for one person only.
All rentals include a life jacket, paddle, waterproof bag, waterproof phone pouch and route map. Life jackets are mandatory. You can also leave your belongings safely at our shop if needed. Snorkelling masks are available to rent for an extra fee.
Please note: access to the ocean and the secret cave depends on sea conditions, including wind, waves and tides. Before departure, our team will let you know whether it is possible and advisable to continue to the ocean and the cave on that day. The river route is calmer and more sheltered, making it a great option even when the ocean route is not recommended.
