This stunning open space is surrounded by some of Tikal's most iconic structures: The imposing Temple of the Great Jaguar (Temple I), built as a tomb of the ruler Jasaw Chan K'awiil I, one of the most important figures in the history of the city. And the Mayan Ball Game, where rituals that went beyond sport were performed, linked to the worldview and the balance between the earthly and spiritual worlds. Here, every structure tells a storey... from sacred rituals to the political power that dominated much of the Mayan world.
