Nestled in the World Heritage Site is the Freshwater Lake, A twenty-five minute drive from Roseau will get you there. It is the largest of Dominica’s lakes and is located in the village of Laudat over 2,500 ft above sea level. The Fresh Water lake is one of the main sources of Titou Gorge, Trafalgar Falls and the Roseau River. It sits at the centre of an old volcano at the foot of Morne Macaque. A trail surrounds the lake and allows for some spectacular views from all angles, overlooking Grand Fond and Rosalie. The lake offers a unique mountain ecosystem and stunning natural beauty. The lake is surrounded by montane forest, a forest that grows on mountains at high elevations, characterised by short trees and an open canopy. Visitors can expect a cooler climate, with temperatures often described as chilly, especially at night. The loop trail around Freshwater Lake takes roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete and offers an easy to moderate walking experience. This trail is optional.
