What you can expect

Dominica’s first people, the Kalinago, have lived in this land for thousands of years. Presently approximately 3,000 Kalinagos live in a collectively owned 3,700 acre territory, spread over eight hamlets, on the north-eastern coast of Dominica. These remaining descendants continue to honour their rich heritage. by offering a unique experience by sharing their history and traditions.
This is an exciting and educational tour to the Kalinago/Carib village of Touna Aute. The village is located on the North Eastern side of the island and is bounded by the stunning Pagua River. Touna Aute is surrounded by spectacular mountain gorges; and home of one of the island’s endemic parrots called the Jaco red necked (Amazonia arausiaca). There are also rare fauna and flora, which are all picturesque moment to savour.

On your arrival to the village, a former Kalinago Chief will welcome you and provide a brief historical overview of the Kalinago People and the community. Herbal teas are served.

Take a short guided walking tour through the residential community to visit a few homes, of which there are different activities where you could be invited to participate. The sustainable technique of growing Kalinago indigenous foods and making cassava bread will be discussed. Some handicrafts souvenirs will be available for purchase. Herbal medicines and there various uses will be discussed. If you are lucky it is quite possible to see a Jaco parrot, but certainly Humming birds, and other species which are very popular in the area. For interested parties, a visit can be made to the Warrior Village which is a recreation site with some of the real huts used in the film Pirates of the Caribbean II, in which some of the residents participated as extras. Enjoy a buffet of homemade fresh delicacies and drinks at the home of the former Kalinago Chief and explore the beautiful flowers. The option to swim in the crystal clear river/pools with sounds of cascading water and the chirping of birds is an encounter of being one with nature. Visitors should wear proper walking shoes and bring along a towel and swim suit, because it will be worth it.

NB: walk is easy
