Your adventure begins at dawn, as you depart from the heart of Bogotá and head for the mountains of the Cordillera Oriental. Aboard a 4x4 vehicle, you will leave the urban hustle and bustle behind to ascend to the mystical Chingaza National Natural Park, a 76,600-hectare treasure that preserves the essence of the Andes.
The experience begins with a traditional breakfast to give you energy before you venture into the moorland ecosystem. Accompanied by a biology expert, you will hike along trails at an elevation of 3,500 metres (11,500 feet), where the fresh air and absolute silence will connect you with nature. During the tour, you will get a close-up look at the fascinating high Andean flora, with a focus on the majestic frailejones, ancient plants responsible for “producing” the water that supplies the capital.
As we make our way through the mist, you will discover why this territory was sacred to the Muisca culture. We will visit glacial lakes that seem suspended in time, while you learn about the water-related importance of this “refuge for fauna and flora.” If you keep your footsteps quiet and with a bit of luck, you will have the unique opportunity to spot wildlife, such as the white-tailed deer or various endemic birds that inhabit this cloud-covered landscape.
The activity concludes after a full immersion in Andean biodiversity, and you will return to Bogotá with a renewed perspective on environmental conservation and Colombia's ancient history. This is a day of moderate physical effort, rewarded with panoramic views that few travellers get to experience.
