What you can expect

Yingxian Wooden Pagoda (应县木塔)

The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, also known as the Fogong Temple Pagoda, is located in Ying County, Datong , Shanxi Province, China. Built in 1056 AD during the Liao Dynasty, it is the oldest and tallest fully wooden pagoda in the world, and a masterpiece of ancient Chinese architecture.

Standing at 67.31 metres high, the pagoda has five visible stories and nine internal levels, all constructed without the use of a single nail. Its sophisticated mortise-and-tenon structure demonstrates the extraordinary craftsmanship and engineering wisdom of ancient China. Despite centuries of earthquakes, wars, and harsh weather, the pagoda remains remarkably well preserved.

Inside the pagoda, visitors can see magnificent Buddha statues, ancient murals, reflecting the strong influence of Buddhist culture during the Liao Dynasty. It offers unique architectural details and a deeper insight into traditional Chinese construction techniques.

Recognised as a National Key Cultural Relic and often praised as one of the Three Great Pagodas of China, the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is not only an architectural wonder but also an invaluable historical and cultural treasure. It attracts scholars, architects, and travellers from around the world who come to admire its beauty, stability, and timeless design.

A visit to the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda offers a rare opportunity to experience the brilliance of ancient Chinese architecture and the profound heritage of Chinese civilisation.
