A morning on Mount Etna built around two things that most tours skip: the stories behind what you are seeing, and the views that open up along the road on the southeast slope as you climb.
The pickup departs from the centre of Catania. The minivan takes the scenic road towards the volcano, and the guide starts talking even before you arrive at Etna. Not a pre-packaged speech, but something more like a storey: geology, local history, myths, the way ordinary life in Sicily has always revolved around the mountain.
Bove Valley
The first stop is on the edge of the Bove Valley, a vast natural depression about 7 km wide, formed about 64,000 years ago when two large eruptive centers collapsed. The view from the rim is one of the best on the whole mountain: the black lava floor below, the outline of the crater above, and the Ionian coast stretching into the distance. The guide explains what you are looking at and why it matters to understanding how Mt. Etna really works.
The cave of a lava slide
A short detour inside a lava slide cave, formed when molten rock made its way underground, leaving a hollow tunnel as it cooled. About 30 minutes inside, with the guide explaining how these caves are formed and what role they have played in the lives of the communities that have always lived in the shadow of Mount Etna.
Hiking at 2,000 metres
This is where you descend and walk. About 75 minutes on foot among the Silvestri craters, formed in the 1892 eruption, and through the lava fields left by the 2001 and 2003 eruptions. No technical equipment required, no extreme elevation gain. The landscape up here looks like another planet, and the views of Catania and the Ionian Coast from this altitude are something you won't easily forget.
A break with a view
A short stop in the refreshment area at 2,000 metres before returning. The opportunity to sit down, enjoy the view, and recover from the walk at your own pace.
Drop-off in Catania
The minivan takes you back to the starting point. From departure to arrival, the tour lasts 5.5 hours. You will return to Catania in time for lunch.
