It was formerly a popular and important place in the independence movements, as social and political struggles brewed there. Its colourful streets, full of murals, squares and music, make it a very attractive tourist spot, known for its bohemian atmosphere, its typical gastronomy and its Carthagean authenticity.

The historic and colonial quarter of the city, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built between the 16th and 18th centuries by the Spanish as a defensive system against pirates and invaders, with stone walls, strongholds and forts that are still preserved.
