What you can expect

  • Arrive on the slopes of Signal Hill with the city humming far below, the Atlantic stretched out like a sheet of blue glass, and Table Mountain looming close enough to touch. Meet your pilot, clip into the harness, and learn the basics.

When it’s time, take a few quick steps forward. The wing inflates, the ground gently falls away, and suddenly you’re airborne. The fear you expected never quite arrives; instead, there’s a strange calm, as if your body instantly understands that this is what it’s meant to do, float.

Once in the air, Cape Town opens up beneath you in cinematic detail. Glide silently above green slopes and winding roads, with the city grid spreading out towards the sea. Camps Bay’s white sand curves along the coastline, waves folding onto themselves in slow motion, while Robben Island sits quietly on the horizon.

The only sounds are the wind and the pilot’s occasional commentary as they catch thermals, letting you stay aloft longer, circling gently as seabirds drift past at eye level. Time feels suspended; five minutes could be twenty. The sensation isn’t like falling or flying in a plane; it’s closer to drifting, weightless, peaceful, and oddly intimate with the landscape.

As you descend towards the landing area near the promenade, the scale of everything shifts again, people become individuals, cars regain their noise, and the smells of salt and city return. The landing itself is soft and surprisingly anticlimactic: a few steps, feet on the ground, and it’s over. Then the adrenaline hits, followed by laughter, disbelief, and a lingering buzz that stays with you long after the harness comes off.
