What you can expect

The second longest wooden jetty in the world offers a gateway to some spectacular sights and a unique journey out to sea. A ride on an electric train and a visit to the Underwater Observatory lets you discover the marine world off the coast of Western Australia and admire the ocean from solid ground.

Your tour starts at the base of the Busselton Jetty, where the Stocker Preston Express waits to carry you out along the mile-long (1.7-km) pier. Relax as your host takes you over the calm waters of Geographe Bay, explaining a bit of the jetty's 150-year history as you go, and keep an eye out for dolphins out in the water and fishermen on the hunt for their day's catch.

When you arrive at the end of the jetty, it's time to descend the stairway that leads to one of only six underwater observatories in the world. An experienced guide leads you through a collection of natural wonders visible through the wide viewing windows that look out on a vast artificial reef, where vividly coloured corals, sponges, fish, and invertebrates thrive.

Your tour through the observatory shows off more than 300 individual sea creatures in their natural habitat some 26 feet (8 m) below the surface. Learn about the rich collection of ocean life that's thriving around you before you head back up for the train ride back to shore.

Between the 29th of April and the 27th of September 2019, an amazing Virtual Reality (VR) Experience is added to the tour when the visibility from the Observatory windows can be affected by adverse weather conditions. Feel like you are actually diving through the Jetty piles with marine life and mermaids with 3D vision through VR googles.

*Virtual Reality Experience is only available during low visibility. When visibility is good to excellent, standard Underwater Observatory Tours will operate.
