What you can expect
Embark on a full-day journey from Bucharest through stunning mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and historic sites in Argeș County, including the famous Transfăgărășan Road. This tour blends nature, architecture, history, and local traditions, accompanied by a professional guide and private transport.
Depart from Bucharest, passing through Pitești and Domnești, the gateway to the Făgăraș Mountains.
Corbii de Piatră – your first stop, offering several attractions:
The Blue House, a charming traditional home;
Ruins of the Templar Chapel, steeped in mystery;
Corbii de Piatră Monastery, carved into rock, a centuries-old place of prayer and spiritual retreat;
Short mountain trail above the monastery, with panoramic views of valleys and surrounding forests.
Nucșoara, a historic mountain village tied to anti-communist resistance. Learn about local partisans and Elisabeta Rizea’s bravery, then enjoy a scenic walk and relaxing moments at Lacul Invârtița, a peaceful forested mountain lake ideal for photos.
Vâlsan Natural Reserve, a protected area of about 10,000 hectares, featuring forests, cliffs, and rare flora and fauna. This region is the only habitat of the asprete (Romanichthys valsanicola), an endemic and critically endangered fish. The Vâlsan River flows through, offering breathtaking views and moments of peace in nature.
Vâlsan Dam, a remarkable 1960s engineering achievement. Built as a concrete arch dam, it is 24 m high and 90 m long, retaining over 0.2 million cubic metres of water. Part of a larger hydrotechnical system, the dam exemplifies how engineering shaped the Făgăraș Mountains’ landscape.
Molivis Natural Reserve, home to peatlands and alpine meadows, with wild landscapes alternating between forests and open glades.
Drive along the Transfăgărășan Road, famous for sweeping views of the Făgăraș peaks and dramatic mountain curves.
Vidraru Dam, 166 m high and 305 m long, forming Lake Vidraru (about 10 km long, holding 465 million m³). The lake and surroundings create a spectacular natural setting, perfect for photos.
Curtea de Argeș – visit:
Curtea de Argeș Monastery, built 1512–1517 by Voivode Neagoe Basarab, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. A masterpiece of Byzantine architecture with unique ornaments, sculptures of the 12 Apostles, frescoes, and a legendary aura. Famous for the legend of Master Manole, symbolising sacrifice and devotion.
Royal Necropolis, resting place of Romanian kings and queens, including Carol I, Queen Elisabeta, Ferdinand, Queen Maria, and King Mihai, reflecting Romania’s history and heritage. Curtea de Argeș itself is one of Wallachia’s oldest settlements, once a princely residence and medieval capital.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant with traditional Romanian cuisine, before returning to Bucharest. The estimated arrival is around 8:00 PM, depending on traffic.
