What you can expect

Do not miss a tour of Santiago Cathedral, the oldest building in Bilbao, and of the Church of San Anton.

Alternatively, concentrate your visit on San Anton church, a beautiful old massive Catholic cathedral, built between the 15th and the early 16th century.

The state-of-the-art audioguide will lead you through the experience and will allow you to learn about these remarkable examples of Gothic architecture in the Basque Country.

Santiago Cathedral, built towards the end of the 14th century, is also known as Bilbao Cathedral and is dedicated to St. James the Apostle, the patron saint of the city.

Marvel at the church's impressive bell tower, spire, and main façade. Take your time exploring the large and beautiful interior with its three naves, vaulted ceilings, and multiple chapels.

Not far from Santiago Cathedral, on the site once occupied by Plaza Vieja de Bilbao, is the Church of San Anton, officially San Antonio Abad.

The building was a symbol of the Basque capital, as its depiction on the city’s emblem attests. It was built in 1468 to meet the spiritual needs of a community going through constant progress. For almost 700 years, the economic and the social life of the city have unfolded around this silent witness and have played an important role in the use of the church. Its interior was transformed into as a cemetery and its balcony became an executive box seat for watching bullfighting,

However, in spite of playing host on numerous occasions to festivities and public events, the building never lost its fundamental religious vocation.

In 1983, the Church of San Anton was recognised as a Cultural Heritage Site with National Historic-Artistic Monument status.
