What you can expect

Right across from the back gate of Beihai Park lies Shichahai — a lakeside district named after ten ancient temples that once ringed its shores. This is old Beijing at its most alive: willow trees leaning over still water, stone bridges worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, and hutong alleys just wide enough for a rickshaw to pass through.
Climb aboard a traditional rickshaw and ride deep into the hutongs. You'll wind along the lively Houhai waterfront, then slip into the quiet, tree-shaded lanes where royal family members, nobles, and scholars once made their homes, passing centuries-old courtyard gates and mansions that once belonged to Qing Dynasty nobility.
Your guide will bring the hutongs to life along the way — the logic of siheyuan courtyard architecture, why certain gates face certain directions, how families have lived in these same alleys for generations, and the stories these walls have quietly held onto for hundreds of years.
The tour ends where hutong life is best understood: inside someone's home. You'll be welcomed into a local hutong family's courtyard house for a hearty, homemade meal — real Beijing home cooking, made the way it's always been made, shared around a family table. No stage, no script — just an honest taste of everyday local life, and a proper way to end a ride through the hutongs.
