What you can expect
Start your journey in the vibrant heart of Bassano del Grappa, in Piazza Garibaldi, where elegant historic buildings and the lively atmosphere of the town offer an authentic introduction to the city. At the centre of the square stands the Civic Tower, a remarkable medieval structure that dominates the area with its battlements and impressive height. Its ancient stonework, slit windows, and decorative details tell the storey of the town’s defensive past, making it an iconic symbol of Bassano del Grappa’s historic centre.
In the same square, we visit the Church of San Francesco, a fine example of Venetian-Gothic architecture. Its exterior, with a simple façade and arched portal, contrasts beautifully with the interior, decorated with precious frescoes, side altars, and a bright central nave, offering a glimpse into centuries of religious history.
We continue the walk to Piazza della Libertà, an elegant urban space surrounded by historic buildings with Venetian-style façades and harmonious arcades. This lively square often hosts local markets and events, offering an immersive experience of everyday life in Bassano del Grappa. Next to the square is the Church of San Giovanni Battista, an impressive religious building with a decorated façade, a tympanum portal, and a tall bell tower. Inside, it houses valuable artworks and a peaceful atmosphere reflecting centuries of devotion and tradition.
Next, we can admire Palazzo Sturm, a Renaissance-style building that tells the storey of the town’s famous grappa production and distillation heritage. With refined architectural details, decorated balconies, and a harmonious façade, the palace offers a glimpse into the town’s strong connection with its renowned local spirit.
The tour continues to Bassano del Grappa’s most famous symbol: the Ponte degli Alpini, also known as the Old Bridge. Designed by Andrea Palladio, this wooden bridge is unique in its design, with arches and pillars reflected in the waters of the Brenta River. Walking across it, admire the colourful houses along the river, wooden beams, side walkways, and artisan shops that once animated the area. The surrounding mountains create an unforgettable scenic backdrop.
Conclude the tour with a panoramic stop at the Ezzelini Castle, located on a hill overlooking the city. From here, admire the ancient castle walls and enjoy spectacular views of Bassano del Grappa and the Brenta River, offering a perfect ending that combines history, architecture, and landscape into an unforgettable experience.
