But people knew how to help themselves: there were all kinds of remedies from the herbalist, and there were barbers and charlatans. And they all touted their skills, no matter how beneficial or harmful they were. Johanna Bader, an 18th-century woman who donned men's clothing to practice her grandfather's profession, tells us about hygiene, dental treatment, orthopedic ailments, and all sorts of curiosities.
