What you can expect
Join a guided walking tour lasting approximately two hours to discover the historic centre of Bagheria, a town renowned for its aristocratic villas and its history linked to the Sicilian nobility. You will retrace the steps of Grand Tour travellers who, between the 18th and 19th centuries, passed through Bagheria to admire its villas, most notably Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. During the walk, you will visit the town's main historical sites, accompanied by explanations about the origins of 18th-century Bagheria and the development of the grand noble residences, while observing the monuments along the way.
The tour will start in the square in front of the train station, opposite Villa Cutò, an elegant building that is the town's calling card and was also owned by the family of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, author of The Leopard. The tour will continue towards Punta Aguglia, a central hub of aristocratic life, where the entrances to several noble villas were located.
Continuing uphill along Corso Butera, you will come to Villa Galletti Inguaggiato, which belonged to the Galletti family, originally from Pisa. According to tradition, the Galletti family descended from the Gualandi, who were linked to the storey of Count Ugolino and were forced to leave Pisa, changing their surname after moving to Sicily. You will then reach the area known as the “Tre Portoni” (Three Gateways), an ancient monumental entrance that marked the beginning of the statue-decorated avenue leading to Villa Palagonia.
The tour will continue towards the Arco del Padre Eterno and Villa Palagonia, the most famous and unique villa in Bagheria, which will be described from Via Palagonia and Piazza Garibaldi.
The tour will continue with a walk along Corso Umberto I, the heart of the town, where you can admire the façades of the main churches, including the Church of the Sepulcher, the Mother Church, and the Church of the Holy Souls, as well as Piazza Larderia, featuring Villa Larderia, another example from the era of grand aristocratic residences.
The tour will end in front of Villa Branciforti Butera, the first villa built in Bagheria and the starting point for the town's development, which is now the Town Hall. During the tour, we will also mention the figures who have made Bagheria famous around the world, such as Renato Guttuso, Ignazio Buttitta, Dacia Maraini, and director Giuseppe Tornatore.
