What you can expect

  • Step into a traditional weaving studio in Oshiage, just east of Asakusa and a short walk from Tokyo Skytree, and experience the craft of Japanese hand weaving. Choose from hundreds of colourful yarns, weave your own table mat on a loom, and enjoy a calm creative moment guided by a weaving instructor, with a dedicated English interpreter throughout.

Begin by learning the basics of hand weaving. The instructor introduces the loom and explains how weaving works. Learn how warp threads (vertical threads) and weft threads (horizontal threads) come together to create fabric. Even complete beginners can easily follow along, and guidance is provided throughout the session.

One of the most exciting parts of the experience is selecting your yarn. The studio offers around 500 different yarns in various colours and textures. You are free to choose combinations that match your taste, allowing every participant to create a unique textile piece.

Using a traditional loom, weave a table mat approximately 30 × 40 cm in size. The process is simple but deeply satisfying, as the fabric slowly grows row by row through your own hands. No two pieces are ever the same—each mat reflects the colours and rhythm chosen by its maker.

The repetitive motion of weaving often creates a quiet and meditative atmosphere. Many participants describe the experience as calming and reflective, similar to mindfulness or creative meditation. By focusing on the movement of threads and the gentle rhythm of the loom, you can step away from everyday stress and reconnect with a slower pace of creativity.

Weaving takes real concentration, which is what makes it feel like a craft rather than a quick activity — and why the time passes so quickly. At the end of the session, finish your mat and take it home: a piece of Tokyo you made with your own hands.
