Activity itinerary

Alcazaba de Antequera (Pass by)

You arrive here at the monumental ensemble of Antequera, which occupies the entire top of the hill. You have the entrance to the Alcazaba on your right, and in front of you stands the Royal College of Santa Maria the Mayor.

Mirador de las Almenillas (Pass by)

OK, it was going up a bit, but honestly wasn’t the view worth it!? You are at the Mirador de las Almenillas, certainly the most beautiful viewpoint in the city.

Arco de Los Gigantes (Pass by)

The gateway to the citadel is called the Arch of the Giants. This construction was wanted in 1585 by the municipality to give a typical classical access to the Muslim fortress. 7 metres high, it opens onto a wall 2 metres thick.

Colegiata de Santa Maria la Mayor (Pass by)

The church you have before you is the Royal College of Santa Maria the Mayor. The collegiate church was founded thanks to Bishop Diego Ramirez de Villaescusa, who was in charge of the Diocese of Malaga.

Plaza del Portichuelo (Pass by)

Portichuelo Square is a beautiful image typical of Andalusian villages. It offers a very nice overview of the church of Sainte-Marie-de-Jésus and the chapel of the Virgin of Help. This church, completed at the beginning of the 17th century, belonged at the base to the friars of the Franciscan Third Order.

Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de los Remedios (Pass by)

A quick word about the church you are passing now. This is the Iglesia de la Paz, belonging to the former convent of Santo Domingo. Dominicans settled in Antequera in 1586, but work on the convent did not begin until the early 17th century.

Plaza San Sebastián (Pass by)

You are in Plaza San Sebastian, one of the prettiest in the city. It was created by a decree of Queen Juana la Loca, yes, translate Joan the Mad, in 1508. Today, it gives one of the most beautiful urban developments in Antequera.

City Council Antequera (Pass by)

Here you have the Antequera City Inn. If we stop in front when at first it does not pay a mine, it is to encourage you to be curious and go see what hides behind its walls.

Plaza de Castilla (Pass by)

Arriving on the Place de Castile, you see in the centre a strange statue representing an embracing couple ready to fall into the void! They overlook the fountain of lovers and recall the legend of the Peña de los Enamorados, the mountain that dominates the valley of Antequera.

Paseo María Cristina, s/n (Pass by)

Here you are, facing the plaza de toros of Antequera. Every city in Spain has an arena like this. The bullfight, born in Andalusia, has always been a symbol of the country. The Antequera bullring is one of the most picturesque in Andalusia.

C. Lucena, 39 (Pass by)

Here you have the “Convento Madre de Dios”, the “Mother of God” convent. The Augustines founded their first convent in Antequera in 1520. They were the first nuns to settle in the city after the surrender of Granada in 1492.

Plaza San Francisco (Pass by)

You now arrive at San Francisco Square, in front of the abasto, the city’s Covered Point of Sale. What would it be like to visit a city without discovering its regional specialities! In Spain, we usually have fun.

Plaza San Francisco (Pass by)

You pass on your left, the Royal Monastery of San Zoilo. The municipal library now occupies the outbuildings of the former convent and its cloister, so don’t hesitate to check out what’s going on behind these walls.

Plaza Santiago (Pass by)

Here you are in the beautiful Plaza Santiago, surrounded by the church of the same name and the convent of Saint Euphemy. The church is rather small, as it was built as a simple hermitage in 1519.

Antequera (Pass by)

In Juan Carlos I Park, next to the Granada Gate, built in 1748, you will find a small viewpoint of the same name. From here you have a panoramic view of the old town of Antequera.

Pl. de las Descalzas, 5 (Pass by)

This beautiful Renaissance facade, which dominates the square, is that of the palace of the Marquis de Peña de los Enamorados. It is a palace built at the end of the 16th century, mixing the Mudéjar know-how typical of Spain, with the Renaissance style of the time.

Plaza Coso Viejo (Pass by)

Here you are in the heart of the old town of Antequera, in the square Coso Viejo, not translate the old trick, the old bullring. It was born in the 16th century from the need to expand the space around Plaza de San Sebastian.
