ANIMAS FORKS GHOST TOWN Elevation 11,200 feet History Founded in 1873, Animas Forks was one of the highest permanent settlements in Colorado. At its peak: Over 450 residents Several hotels General stores A post office Saloons Assay offices Winter temperatures often reached 40 degrees below zero. The famous Duncan House remains one of the most photographed structures in Colorado. Look For Duncan House Bay Window Old Jail Mining Equipment Original Main Street Pirate Fun Fact The town's last permanent residents left in the 1920s. Now get out, walk in some of the buildings and explore! The town has been preserved and you can actually go inside the buildings, and there are plaques with history throughout the buildings as well to learn about the area’s infamous mining history.
