What you can expect

  • San Juan de Dios Square
Ancient Roman port front. Here, the role of Gades as a strategic harbour and commercial hub is introduced, a departure point for salted goods, garum, and agricultural products to the entire Mediterranean. It is the ideal place to contextualise the historical evolution of the city from its Phoenician origins to its peak Roman splendour.

    Calle Plocia
A street that preserves the imprint of Roman urbanism adapted to an island setting. The organisation of the streets, the presence of houses (domus), and the daily life of Romanized families in Cádiz are explained.

    Calle Santo Domingo
Area related to port and artisanal activities. Here, we delve into the trades linked to the sea, the transfer of goods, and the intense economic activity that characterised the city.

    Balbus the Younger monument
This monument pays tribute to Balbus the Younger, the most influential figure in Roman Gades. It tells the storey of his extraordinary political career in Rome and his role as a great benefactor of his hometown, promoting ambitious urban projects that transformed Gades into a monumental city.

    Campo del Sur
One of the most evocative spaces on the route. Facing the ocean, the intimate relationship between the city and the sea, the ancient walls, the burial areas outside the walls, and the arrival of ships loaded with goods from all over the Empire are explained.

    Calle San Juan de Dios
Connection between the harbour and public buildings. It allows you to imagine the urban bustle, the movement of merchants and citizens, and the shows in a lively and dynamic city.

    Roman Theatre
The Roman Theatre of Cadiz, one of the largest in Hispania. Its architecture, social and political function, and the role of the theatre as an instrument of prestige and propaganda are explained. It's the highlight of the tour.

    • From May 1, 2026, the Roman theatre will be closed for 22 months for restoration. Instead, you will visit the Roman Theatre Interpretation Centre and the section dedicated to Roman culture at the Cadiz Museum.

    Cathedral Square
Centuries of history are concentrated under this space. It addresses the superimposition of Roman structures, hydraulic systems, and the continuity of the public and religious use of the site.

    Plaza de las Flores
Traditional market space. Here, the Roman commercial heritage and the importance of food supply in the city are explained.

    Monument to Columella
Tribute to Columella, one of the great agronomists of antiquity. It highlights the importance of Gades in agricultural production, oil and wine, and its intellectual influence in the Empire

Roman Salted Fish Factory. One of the most representative spaces of the Cadiz economy. The process of making salted fish and garum, their export, and their fame in Rome are detailed.

    San Antonio Square
Last alternative stop where the explanation about Roman urbanism and its legacy in the historic city is reinforced
