This park is located on the left bank of the Kura (Mtkvari) River. It is easy to access from the Old Town via the pedestrian famous The Bridge of Peace, which is in the list of “Amazing Bridges, that are the definition of architectural Masterpieces”. However, the opinion about the bridge was controversial, as it is situated in the historical district of Tbilisi. Some people complained, that the bridge unduly dominated the historical old towns, and so, obscured the area’s old architectural landmarks. But, as we know, so-called “black publicity” is one of the best advertisement ever, so, you can hardly see anyone, who haven’t walked through the Bridge of Peace.

Narikala consists of two walled sections between the sulphur baths and the Tbilisi Botanical Garden. This fortress sometimes was even called Shuris-tsikhe, which means The Rival Fortress. The fortress walls date from various periods, the earliest from the 4th century, when it was a Persian citadel. Most of the present walls were built in the 8th century by the Arab emirs, whose palace was inside the fortress. In Georgian sources it is called “Mother Fortress”. Narikala offers you some of the best panoramas of the city. This is an ancient symbol of Tbilisi’s defensive brilliance. There are two ways to get there and both are incredibly beautiful: first is to walk up from Meidan, one of the most beautiful places in Old Tbilisi and another one is Cable Car, from Rike Park- a host of a numerous entertainment facilities, like singing and dancing fountains, artificial climbing wall, children’s maze, mega-chess board, as well as footpaths and quiet corners.

Its construction began in 1881. Its creation was the idea of Batumi district governor Mekalov, who commissioned the coastal boulevard to be built to a famous Prussian gardener named Reseller. Later, the planned development of the boulevard was handed over to a French gardener and designer invited to Georgia, Mikheil d’Alphonse, who is referred to in historical records as the “Kind Genie of Batumi Seaside”. The development of the boulevard also owes much to Gordeziani, who studied in France and was appointed the manager of the City Park Boulevard in 1917. The first colourful dancing fountains of the Boulevard have been functioning since 1977. In 2009, the length of the Boulevard was significantly increased and now reaches 7 kilometres. The so-called New Boulevard was designed by a Spanish architect and built in accordance with the latest standards.
Gonio Fortress
  • 1h
  • Admission ticket included
The Gonio fortress or the Gonio-Apsaros fortress is the oldest fortress of Georgia. It is an impressive piece of Roman-Byzantine military architecture, which covers 47,000 sq. m. within a rectangle of high stone walls with 18 towers (though it was said there were 22). Built by the Romans in the 1st century AD, it was occupied by the Byzantines in the 6th century and by the Ottomans in the 16th century. There is a legend that the name of Apsaros originates from the ancient Greek myth about Argonauts. According to the legend this was the place where Apsyrtus, King Ayet’s son, killed by Jason, was buried. Many legends and myths are connected with the Gonio-Apsaros Fortress. The Fortress territory has a tomb which up to date is considered to be the Apostle Mathew’s tomb – one of twelfth Jesus Christ’s disciples whom Savior accepted to his circle instead of Judas Iscariot. According to one of the versions, Apostle Mathew after Christ’s death came to the Gonio Fortress and stayed there to preach. The Apostle Mathew’s tomb is found in the territory of the Roman Praetorium (from Latin “general’s tent”). Since the Gonio-Apsaros Fortress built in the beginning of our era as a base citadel of Roman troops, then a residence of a Roman general, a garrison commander was called as a Praetorium. The Praetorium only survived as huge stone pedestals in a form of crosses presumably standing over the Apostle Mathew’s tomb.
