What you can expect

Begin your dance workshop with the Kalamatianos, Greece's most beloved circle dance, a twelve-step pattern old enough to appear in ancient depictions of dance, and joyful enough to still open every Greek wedding and celebration today. Locked arm in arm, feel exactly why it's built for connection.

From there, we'll move into the Hasaposerviko, the fast, spirited cousin of the older Hasapiko, the true “butcher's dance” born in the guild halls of Byzantine Constantinople, where it once mimicked sword combat, line by line. Balkan influences, carried by travelling musicians, gave it new speed over the centuries. Zorba made it famous, your legs will make it personal.

Then comes the Zeibekiko, the most personal dance in the Greek repertoire. Danced alone, in the middle of everyone else, arms outstretched like wings, it grew among the rebetes, Greece's own blues musicians and outsiders of the early twentieth century. Learn its structure and spirit, and discover how every honest version of a Zeibekiko is the right one.

Finally, turn to Thrace's own musical bloodline with the Baidouska, a lively dance native to this region, still danced today at village panigyria across Thrace and the Rhodope mountains.
