Overview

On this charcoal tour, you’ll go beyond simply learning how charcoal is made.
You’ll explore its century-long history and discover the deep bond between charcoal, everyday life, and the environment.
Through hands-on experiences such as wood-chopping, carrying logs, and grilling mochi, both children and adults can feel the warmth and wisdom passed down through generations.
By the end of this journey, we hope you'll understand and respect why this tradition is worth protecting.

Activity itinerary

Urahoro Shrine

I will introduce the history of this 130-year-old shrine and its connection with Urahoro Charcoal. It's a shrine known for breast health and safe travel blessings. There's an unique potato-shaped omikuji (fortune slip) that you can only find in Urahoro Shrine.

㈱浦幌木炭

  • 1h 15m
I will introduce the century-old history and how to make charcoal and show you around the kilns. If you join in the right time, you may have a chance to enter the open kiln. You will discover how charcoal connects people, daily life, and the nature through hands-on activities like wood-chopping and mochi grilling with the support of the craftsmen. And don't forget you can make your one and only charcoal decoration as a souvenir!^^ It’s interactive and fun, and both adults and kids usually enjoy this part!

Michi-no-Eki Urahoro

  • 20m
You can buy some local souvenirs at the roadside station. And I will tell you the stories of farmers. Highly recommend to try the cream puff and kinako ice cream!
