Saratlı Underground City of Cappadocia The formation of underground cities began millions of years ago when the volcanic mountains of Erciyes, Melendiz and Hasandağı became active and exploded. The people of the period noticed this feature of the soil, and they pierced the upper hard layer and carved the soft and light coloured mass below the surface with chisels and hammers. While underground cities started to be built from prehistoric times, they were actively used in Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
