Punta del Este is located on the peninsula between the Rio de la Plata (River Plate) and the Atlantic Ocean. Walk Avenida Gorlero and buy handmade goods at the market. Rent a car and take a daytrip to Casapueblo, a gorgeous hotel and museum designed by Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro. Stop by the Arboretum Lussich and then drive east to La Barra. This town's trendy beaches, stylish nightclubs and exclusive restaurants often host celebrities.
During Punta del Este's high season, from Christmas through January, expect notably higher prices. It is recommended to book accommodation months in advance. Fans of a quieter ambiance may prefer visiting from July through October, when migrating whales can be seen from the shore.
