The historic centre of Monterrey has cobblestone streets, charming shops and cafés, museums and a buzzing nightlife.

Barrio Antiguo (Old Town) is the charming historic center of Monterrey. It is packed with fascinating 19th-century buildings, museums, bistros and boutiques. Stroll through cobblestone streets with quaint shops that call to mind a previous age. In the evenings, join young revelers at the area’s lively pubs, bars and clubs.

The Macroplaza, one of the largest plazas in the world, is located in the heart of the Barrio Antiguo. It is a spacious square full of iconic sites and monuments. See the Faro del Comercio (Lighthouse of Commerce), a 230-foot (70.1-meter) structure that shoots a green laser beam around the city. Admire the statue of the Roman god of the sea at the majestic Fuente de Neptuno (Neptune Fountain).

Near the plaza, you will find many restaurants and boutiques. Try Monterrey specialties, such as cabrito (baby goat). Some restaurants also offer international cuisine. Peruse the shops for souvenirs.

Visit the State Museum of Popular Culture to see the temporary art exhibitions. Take part in a range of activities to learn about the society of the Nuevo León area of Mexico. Nearby, take a look at the Casa de los Títeres (Puppet House) to see the comical puppets on display.

The Barrio Antiguo area is one of Monterrey’s major nightlife spots. Enjoy a beer or tequila with the locals at one of the popular bars. The area can be unsafe in the evenings, so take extra care with your belongings and try to stay in large groups.

Barrio Antiguo is located in the heart of Monterrey, around the Palacio de Gobierno. Get here by the metro system. The Santa Lucia Canal runs through the middle of the area with museums, restaurants and shops either side of its banks. Just to the east of the historic center, you will find the vast green area of Parque Fundidora.
