Stellenbosch

The second-oldest town in South Africa is a haven for fine wines, gourmet produce, art galleries, mountainous scenery and fascinating European heritage.

Stellenbosch is a historic town known for its architecture, scenery and excellent wineries, at the base of a dramatic mountain valley. South Africa’s second-oldest town was established in 1679 and showcases its history in fine Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian buildings. Find examples of historic architecture under the oak trees on Dorp Street, such as the Oom Samie se Winkel antique store and the Old Lutheran Church.

Discover the town’s fascinating heritage at the Village Museum, a collection of preserved and restored houses spanning from 1709 to the mid-1800s. Artwork by notable South African artists is on display at the Rembrandt van Rijn Gallery within a Cape Dutch mansion. See a collection of historic weapons at the VOC Kruithuis. Young and old will love the vintage cars and toys showcased at the Toy and Miniature Museum.

Stellenbosch has come to represent South Africa’s oldest wine route and features over 130 wineries. Explore the route in your rental car or join a tour to visit different wineries for tastings, cellar tours and a picnic on the estate. Enjoy the region’s wines in Stellenbosch town at the various historic bodegas.

Nature lovers and adventurers will enjoy the hikes throughout the region. Explore the Vineyard Hiking Trail, a daylong hike that winds through vineyards, lush forests and olive trees, dotted with beautiful lookouts of the Stellenbosch Mountains. Try mountain biking through the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve or take in the region’s magnificent scenery from above on a hang-gliding tour or hot-air balloon trip.

Stellenbosch features a range of cultural events. Try local wines at the Stellenbosch Wine Festival in January. Live music features at the Oude Libertas Summer Season Concerts at the town’s open-air amphitheatre. The Jazz and Cheese Fondue Festival combines the town’s three loves: music, food and wine.

Reach Stellenbosch in 40 minutes by car from Cape Town, or take a train from the city. Make Stellenbosch a destination on your drive through the wine routes of the Western Cape.
