The hotel is very nice. However, the experience was let down by some of the staff. On arrival, the bell boy was most helpful with unloading our bags. However, the reception lady was clueless. Even though she quickly found my prepaid booking in the system, she went through screen after screen, clicking away merrily without explaining what she was doing. There were two other staff who walked by from time to time, looked over her shoulder and then walked away. A queue of guests behind us grew impatient. It took over 20 minutes before she finally gave us our room key, but without even a word of explanation of why it took her so long. The room was nice and tasteful, and the furnishing was top quality. We visted the spa/onsen. The reception lady asked us to leave our mobile phones in individual lockers and gave us each a number tag. However, the number tag did not match the locker number! On leaving the spa, she asked us to hand back the number tag before opening the phone lockers, Not surprisingly, the wrong lockers were opened and were empty. At first, she insisted that these are the correct lockers, and showed us the number on the key tags as proof. After a fashion, we persuaded her to open the phone lockers that we had actually deposited our phones. Bingo, our phones were sitting inside these! The breakfast buffet was below par. The cooked food was barely warm. It took a while before cutleries were provided after asking. Why aren't these available at a hotel buffet???

Room was clean and spacious. Amenities were thoughtful. Staff was very helpful and friendly.

This magnifican hotel is getting old. I requires a renovation, being in such extraordinary location and building, one of the most famous in the world

I've always wanted to experience a stay at an EDITION hotel, so I was really looking forward to my stay at The Shanghai EDITION. Unfortunately, perhaps my expectations were too high, especially considering the hotel charges upwards of RMB 4,000 per night. The moment I stepped into the room, I immediately regretted not choosing the brand-new Alila instead. For a hotel that isn't particularly old, the room was surprisingly poorly maintained. The sofa had visible stains, and the bathrooms were no better. Even the Bund view was disappointing. You literally had to stand in a particular corner of the room to catch a glimpse of it, which I found rather strange. What disappointed me even more was the standard of service. For a hotel positioning itself as a five-star luxury property, the English proficiency of the staff was shockingly poor. The gentlemen stationed at the entrance lacked the polish and professionalism I would expect from a hotel of this calibre. The overall service experience felt surprisingly ordinary, more akin to what I would expect from a casual roadside eatery than a luxury hotel. To be fair, most of the staff were helpful when approached, and that was perhaps the one redeeming aspect of the stay. At RMB 4,000+ a night, there are simply far too many better options in Shanghai. Unfortunately, The Shanghai EDITION did not live up to either the brand's reputation or the price tag.
