In a fascinating coastal location, this lively town offers pristine beaches and woodland walks as well as some absorbing museums.

Experience the wild beauty of the coastline around Yarmouth and discover why the sea is such an important part of life here. Trek through untouched parks and nature reserves or explore an exciting heritage of great art and culture.

Breathe in the salty sea air as you stroll along the waterfront of Yarmouth and watch the colourful fishing boats come and go from the wharf. Sit for a while with a coffee or eat a fresh seafood sandwich.

Slip away from the protection of the natural harbour and drive to spectacular Cape Forchu. Away from shops and houses this is nature at its purest with more than 8 hectares (19 acres) of natural reserve incorporating gorgeous sandy coves and hiking trails. The centrepiece is the Cape Forchu Lightstation on the cape’s exposed rocky tip. This stands 23 metres (75 feet) tall and the light can be seen up to 55 nautical kilometres (30 nautical miles) out to sea. Stop off at the café and take in the magnificent views before you return to town.

If you still have energy, enjoy a stroll through the tranquil Broad Brook Wetland Park at the southeastern end of town or else check out the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia on Main Street. There is a general maritime focus with a large ship portrait collection alongside pieces by artists such as Maud Lewis and Forshaw Day.

Just a 5-minute walk from here on Willow Street is the Yarmouth County Museum with an extensive range of intriguing artefacts. Marvel at how traditional clothing has changed over time and admire a stunning 19th-century stagecoach.

There is no shortage of restaurants in Yarmouth with some superb Italian and Asian food to complement the impressive selection of fish. Enjoy a meal overlooking the water or try out some of the local favourites in the town centre.

Yarmouth is on the south coast of Nova Scotia 3 hours southwest of Halifax. There are plenty of hotels and guesthouses. The Seafest Festival in July is not to be missed with dancing, live music and plenty of delicious local food to try.

Immerse yourself in a rich maritime culture in Yarmouth.
