I remembered this place when I was a child as opulent and elegant, but it seems to have fallen on hard times. The yard is as weedy and neglected as the house. The downstairs is really beautiful, but the rooms are in need of serious renovation and they need to establish a clear system to contact staff after hours in an emergency. We didn’t find out until after we booked that 1) we would be charged a cancellation fee by the hotel regardless of notice and 2) we MUST check in by 7pm or we would be unable to check in at all. We also discovered when our toilet broke at 7:30 that there was no one at the desk or manning the phones after 7 either. Fortunately, they responded quickly to an Expedia check in report and moved us. The original room had dirty carpets and an ancient mattress. The new room was cleaner, much more comfortable, and less a hodgepodge of chipped and frayed accessories. The claw foot tubs are fantastic and I hope they keep those although a step stool into them and grab bar would have been nice as they are a steep climb in a wet area. Everyone was very nice and to be clear they did move us quickly and with apologies, but it was not fun to try and fix a hotel toilet on vacation, the whole place needed a good cleaning, and it wasn’t clear how to get help when we needed it. They need to drop the rates until they can properly renovate and clean.
