Tour historical attractions, ride on an old steam railway and explore the green environs of this picturesque town in mid-Wales.

The picturesque town of Welshpool lies just 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) from the border with England. It is surrounded by gorgeous countryside and filled with historic sites. Venture into a 13th-century fortress, hike along walking trails and paddle a canoe along the canal.

Start your visit with a stroll along the Heritage Trail, a route that cover 20 places of historic interest. Among the sites you will come across are timber-framed buildings from the 16th century, the 19th-century Christ Church and Powysland Museum and Canal Centre. This was a canal warehouse during the 19th century, but today covers the archaeology and social history of the region.

Also on the trail is the Town Hall, built in 1837. Come here on Saturdays and Mondays for the market, and on the first Friday of each month for the farmers' market. Travel further back into the past with a visit to Powis CastleOpens in a new window, a medieval fortress. Stroll around the castle’s formal gardens.

For more scenic walks, go to Montgomery Canal, a waterway that passes through the Welsh Marches. There are numerous nature reserves bordering the canal and a path for walking and cycling. Try and spot local wildlife, including otters and water voles. You can also paddle through the area in a canoe.

Another way to experience the beauty of the scenery here is to book a trip on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. The old-fashioned steam train makes a 16-mile (25.7-kilometer) return trip through the green Welsh countryside.

At night, take your pick from one of the pubs and restaurants. There is also a nightclub and a theater. Consider coinciding your visit with some of the town's annual festivals, including the Welshpool Carnival in May and the Country and Western Music Festival in July.

Reach Welshpool by car or train from England where international airports in Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester are within easy reach of the town.

Enjoy a vacation in a beautiful part of Wales, home to scenic wonders and fascinating historical sites.

Fabulous couple of days
"Amazing food in the restaurant, comfortable spacious room with lovely communal terrace. Very clean. Only downfall was on night 1 the pub alarm went off at midnight and 3am and as no staff sleep on site, we just had to put up with it which resulted in a sleepless night"
