Prehistoric artefacts, medieval ruins, Viking heritage and nature parks make this a fascinating destination.

The captivating town of Viborg has Viking relics and medieval architecture. Hike, bike, camp or fish in its nature parks and river systems and relax in the scenic reserves.

Viborg is one of the oldest towns in Denmark, established by Vikings in the eighth century. During the Middle Ages it was of strategic political and religious importance due to its location in the middle of the country.

See the city’s primary landmark, Viborg Cathedral, one of the most significant churches in the country. The original foundations date back to the year 1100. After substantial fire damage, the current structure was built in the 18th century. Now only the original crypt remains. Step inside to see the crypt and frescoes by Joakim Skovgaard.

Explore the older areas of town, north and west of the cathedral. See 16th-century homes in Sankt Mogens Gade including the buildings Den Hauchske Gård, Villadsens Gård and Den Gamle Præstegård. View the old Asmild Church and the Sortebrodre Kirke.

Walk along the historical footpaths of the Hærvejen (Military Road), where for hundreds of years pilgrims, beggars, traders and merchants travelled from Viborg to Hamburg. See the Old Military Road Stone, a monument showing the distances to Christian holy places such as Rome and Jerusalem.

Stroll through recreated Hvolris Iron Age Village located on an archeological site where the actual village remains were found.

Enjoy the scenic outdoors and relax by the water in one of the area’s many nature parks. Have a picnic and fish or sail on Viborg Lake. Hike or mountain bike along the winding trails near Hald Lake or take a boat onto the water with your fishing rod and tackle.

Located in central Jutland, Viborg is a 70-minute train journey from Aarhus and a 5-hour drive from Copenhagen. Walking is the best way to get around the town. Use public buses and taxis too.
