4/5 Good

Business traveller
Liked: Cleanliness, property conditions & facilities
Back in the early nineties I found myself at a motel named the El Cortez on US Highway 28, within spitting distance of the Mexican border - a trip that included a duffel bag of cash, an angry midget biker, a disagreeable Comanche Indian of unknown origin and a midnight dash to Juarez. Why do I recount this story? Because my stay at the Top of the Town took me back to those halcyon days, albeit without any of the aforementioned characters. Parking my vehicle within a foot of the door I entered my room to find it in the same condition that I suspect a traveller from the seventies may have experienced... and I love that sort of stuff. The room is as basic as it comes but that's OK - it does the trick if all you need is a room for the night (even if you don't need to protect a duffel bag of cash from a pursuing hoard... or maybe you do... no judging). This isn't somewhere for a family stay as it's a bit basic but if you're passing through town then give it a try. I felt safe and there was no foot traffic around as the motel is behind the main hotel and is not a thoroughfare. It was quiet and I slept quite well and the bathroom facilities, while "classic" are nonetheless fine. If you're a single traveller passing through and want to save a buck or two while pretending that you're holed up equal distance from the Texas state line and Mexican border then this is the place for you.

Basic motel
Very basic motel. Was clean and convenient. Served our needs for a single night stay.

3/5 Okay

Liked: Staff & service
Good service, average room, poor internet
Staff were friendly and helpful. The room was a typical drive-in motel room. Small, could be cleaner, but not bad for the low price. The Woolworths supermarket just in front is a plus because breakfast is not provided by the hotel. There was a toaster, kettle and microwave. Unfortunately the internet was very poor for my two-day stay. Most of the time it didn't work, not only in the room but even in the main building. When I did get it to work it only worked for about 15 minutes. There is a bus stop right in front of the motel, enabling easy access to central Burnie. If you're looking for an affordable option and don't mind poor internet, it's a reasonable choice.

3/5 Okay

Basic but could be really retro cool.
Basic in every way but I can see how it might have been a 'hot' property once upon a time, and could be again with some investment. It could be really retro cool with the right treatment.
