Tybee Island

Visit beautiful sandy beaches and see one of the oldest lighthouses in North America on this small island in Chatham County.

Enjoy swimming, fishing, kayaking and more outdoor activities on Tybee Island. Visit a historical museum housed in a late-19th century coastal artillery battery to learn about the island’s history and go to a marine science centre with exhibits and guided beach walks to learn about the delicate ecosystem.

Admire local artwork at a gallery and shop for the latest fashion in an independent boutique. Visit historic coastal fortifications dating to the American Civil War. With so many outdoor activities and cultural attractions, Tybee Island is a great place to stay when visiting the state of Georgia.

Tybee Island Light Station is one of the island’s most recognisable attractions. This remarkable structure was built in the early 18th century. Climb 178 steps to the top for exceptional views of the whole island. The station’s light is still operational and helps guide mariners safely along the coast.

Call into the Tybee Museum in the Battery Garland of Fort Screven on the light station grounds. This museum preserves the rich history of the island with artefacts and exhibits dating back 5 centuries. View exhibits outlining America’s colonial period of the mid-18th century and the outbreak of the American Civil War during the mid-19th century.

Stop by the Tybee Island Marine Science Center for educational programs and guided marine treks. Learn about Georgia’s nesting sea turtles and the turtle conservation programs run by the centre. Set out on a guided beach walk to learn about the region’s tides, sand dunes and marine life.

Partake in the outdoor activities that are popular on the island. Go bird watching, board a fishing charter or enjoy a day of water sports. See more than 300 bird species on the Colonial Coastal Birding Trail, which winds around the island. Tybee Island is also the departure point for marine watching tours during which you can see local bottlenose dolphins.

Tybee Island is about 32 kilometres (20 miles) from Savannah. Stay in luxurious beach hotels or self-catered apartments in the small island city. Alternatively, find luxury riverfront hotels and inns in the historic downtown Savannah area. Rent a bicycle to embrace the island pace of life. With peaceful neighbourhoods and scenic coastal trails, Tybee Island is the perfect destination to explore by bike.
