Once a week, one of our team members will stop by the property to put out the trash cans, replenish our supplies, and/or restock sheets and towels. They will NOT enter the home. They have access to the storage or shed with a code. This day may or may not fall during your stay.
TOWN OF TWIN LAKES & SURROUNDING AREAS Just outside the cabin you will enjoy stunning views of Mt Elbert - the second-highest peak in the contiguous U.S. as well as of Mt. Hope, another of the tallest peaks in Colorado. You will fall in love with the clear morning lake views and awe-inspiring panoramic perspectives. These gorgeous mountain views create an amazing backdrop for the ever-changing light show, which offers glorious sunrises and mind-blowing sunsets. Occasional passing storms and rainbows add to the magnificent display of nature.

There’s plenty of space! • Whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River • Fly fishing the 100+ miles of Gold Medal trout water on the Arkansas River • Hunting • Gold-panning
We are accessible year-round. Our cabin is located on a county road that gets plowed when there's snow; however, we still recommend AWD with good tire tread in the snowy months (generally December to April). Winter driving conditions on the highways leading to the cabin can change rapidly, so check the weather before heading out. Colorado has some specific winter driving laws pertaining to tire requirements.
DRIVING DISTANCES - SKI RESORTS: • Copper - 50 min • Ski-Cooper - 40 min • Monarch - 1 hour 10 min • Vail - 1 hour 15 min • Keystone - 1 hour 15 min • Breckenridge - 1 hour 15 min
Frosted peaks rise above still lakes as you step outside into crisp alpine air. Morning light glows over Mt. Elbert and Mt. Hope, casting shifting colors across the valley. Inside, warmth surrounds you - a quiet cabin where every detail invites calm, connection, and unhurried time together.
Sleeping arrangements The single-level cabin sleeps 2 guests in a cozy bedroom with a king bed and memory foam mattress. Soft linens, extra pillows, and room-darkening shades make it easy to unwind after a day of mountain adventure. A full bathroom includes a bathtub, hot water, and bathroom essentials for a comfortable stay.
Kitchen & dining The full kitchen provides everything you need to cook at home, including a stove, oven, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, and coffee maker. Enjoy meals at the dining table or step outside to the BBQ grill when the mountain air turns brisk but clear. A selection of cooking basics and dishware make dining easy and relaxed.
Comfort & amenities Stay warm with heating throughout the cabin, and use ceiling or portable fans to keep air moving. The space includes essentials like towels, bed sheets, and soap, plus an iron, hangers, and clothing storage. For entertainment, unwind with the TV or a few friendly rounds of board games as the evening quiet settles in.
Outdoor living A private entrance leads to your own outdoor area with furniture and a BBQ grill. Nearby, a communal firepit welcomes evenings spent under countless stars - the night sky here reveals the Milky Way in rare clarity. Free parking and self check-in via smart lock make your stay simple and independent.
Neighborhood Located just minutes from Twin Lakes and Mt. Elbert Forebay, the area offers year-round outdoor adventure. In late fall and early winter, nearby trails are perfect for peaceful walks, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing. The surrounding 14ers - Elbert, Massive, Huron, and more - create a dramatic backdrop for every view, whether you’re exploring the trails or relaxing with coffee on the patio.
Perfect for Ideal for two guests, the cabin suits couples, solo travelers, or small families with a Pack ’n Play available on request. Pet-friendly (fee applies), it’s a welcoming retreat for those seeking quiet moments and mountain beauty at 9,200 feet.
There is no public transportation that will take you up here. You will need your own vehicle. 4WD is recommended throughout the year and required during winter months due to potential heavy snowfall.
In the patio area, you'll find a dedicated grill space, part of our shared outdoor amenities. Enjoy evenings around the communal firepit, a cozy gathering spot shared among our four cabin properties. Kindly note that the futons in the cabins are designed for seating only and are securely fixed in place. They cannot be converted into beds.
BRINGING ALONG YOUR FURRY FRIEND? Let us know a little about your dog(s) and we should be able to accommodate with an adjustment to our cleaning fee. $75 cleaning fee per dog, maximum two dogs only. Sorry, no cats permitted.
Events are subject to approval. Please note event fees will apply.
THE WILDLIFE: There are animals around the premises including many deer, foxes, multiple species of raptors and other birds, armadillos, many rabbits, black bears, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, coyotes and more! You won’t see all of these at the cabin, but if you get out on the trails, you might get lucky...
MOUNTAIN LIVING 1. We are located just shy of 10,000 feet so please drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness. 2. Sometimes the wind kicks up to remind us of all the things we cannot control, but it usually settles down again within a few hours. You would be best not to leave belongings outside. 3. Wildlife is somewhat rare but has been known to wander through so please do not leave food outside at night. 4. Be prepared with lots of clothing layers so you can adapt to changing conditions. Mountain storms come and go quickly. 5. 4WD is recommended throughout the year and required during winter months due to potential heavy snowfall.
RESPECT The Trout Retreat Cabin is located in a remote, tiny mountain town. Twin Lakes is pretty amazing; in fact, our family is a little apprehensive to share it with others. As visitors to the area, please think about your impact on our town and the small surrounding communities. Please respect full-time residents' privacy and solitude. Follow Leave No Trace guidelines when visiting and recreating in the beautiful outdoors, and consider supporting local dining and shopping during your stay.
SMOKING We like to keep our cabins as fresh as the outside alpine air. If you need to smoke, you'll need to step outside to do so. There will be a $600 fine for any smoking inside the cabins.
FIRE There is currently a fire ban in place. Violations of this prohibition is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor by a fine of not more than $5,000. Please be careful and check with Lake County for more recent updates.

I really enjoyed the stay at The Trout Retreat. It was calm, quiet, and cozy cabin. Cabin was clean and well maintained. It does offer all the needed amenities. Really a sweet cabin. Spectacular view of the mountains. It is bit confusing to reach the area especially at night, so I suggest get there during day time for the first visit.
Twin Lakes is a beautiful getaway spot, and Trout Cabin is a short drive up from the lakes, and perfect for a couple. There is a minor Google navigating error that tells you to turn on Pan Ark Drive while the street sign says Ross Drive, so don't be confused, just turn left at Ross Drive when Google says Pan Ark Drive. The cabin has a pleasant view of the mountains across the lakes. Twin Lakes doesn't have a lot of amenities that are consistently open, so bring your own food and use Trout Cabin's efficient little kitchen with gas stove, microwave, and refrigerator. The lakes are great for paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing with spectacular mountain views. There are also plenty of excellent hiking options.
Beautiful mountainside cabin with incredible views ! Small but quaint and had all the amenities needed for a comfortable weekend.

This was a quiet getaway in a perfect location for it's proximity to Leadville, Buena Vista, and Twin Lakes. Getting the WIFI code was tricky but it all worked out.
This place was perfect for our little get away, I only wish the shower head was higher ( I am 5’6” and my husband is 5’9”) and the shower head came to my chest and the oven didn’t work, but other than that it was a great little place and the scenery was amazing will be back for sure

Incorrect information given by host about restaurant available for dinner. Restaurant in town has been sold so nothing available for dinner during our 2 nite stay.
We were blown away with the views and beauty around us. Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful white Christmas. The cabin was very cozy and well stocked. The wifi didn't work while we were there but it was probably because of all of the snowfall the night before. We used our hotspot instead. Great heat, never got cold inside. Will definitely be back in the summer!

Wow, what an amazing place!
The home had the most gorgeous views. It seemed professionally designed on the interior with all the little things a guest might want. I would highly recommend this place!
